Yvan Muller held a charging Jose Maria Lopez at bay to clinch victory in the second World Touring Car Championship race of the day at the Nordschleife.

The Frenchman took the lead at the end of the 14 mile first lap from pole sitter Tiago Monteiro and held station for the remaining two laps, despite retaining intense pressure from the Portuguese driver and, latterly, Lopez.

Indeed, Lopez was made to work hard as he climbed from tenth position on the grid, making most of his progress on the final lap and passing both Gabriele Tarquini and Monteiro for second in the closing stages, only to run out of time to challenge Muller.

Given the circuit's length, the race was closely matched with the top four Muller, Lopez, Monteiro and Tarquini split by just six tenths at the chequered flag.

Behind them, Sebastien Loeb completed the top five, ahead of Mehdi Bennani in the Sebastien Loeb Racing Citroen, while Rob Huff gave LADA a welcome run to seventh in the Vesta, ahead of Tom Coronel, series returnee Jaap Van Lagen and John Filippi.
