WTCC Race of Russia: Rydell poised for WTCC return in Russia

Rickard Rydell is gearing up for his WTCC return in Moscow after missing the past three rounds with thyroiditis
Swedish WTCC driver Rickard Rydell is preparing for his long-awaited comeback in Russia after making 'significant rehabilitation progress' from thyroiditis.

The former British Touring Car champion has been absent from the past three rounds of the 2015 WTCC championship after being ruled out with the illness.

The 47-year-old had enjoyed a successful start to the season with a two points finishes at the season opener in Argentina in March.

The Nika International squad has been absent since Argentina but in a team statement it has declared its return for the WTCC Race of Russia next month (5-7 June).

“Indications from the two-day test were largely positive, and Rydell continues to make significant rehabilitation progress,” the statement read. “Honda Racing team Sweden and Rickard Rydell are now looking forward to returning to the paddock for the forthcoming WTCC Race of Russia.”

The former WTCC race winner had been diagnosed with thyroiditis in April and has missed the subsequent rounds in Morocco, Hungary and Germany.

Rydell made a comeback in a two-day test at Mantorp Park in Sweden to evaluate his health as well as new suspension parts from Ohlins.

In his absence the Swedish driver has slipped down to 16th in the WTCC championship standings.
