WTCC Race of Russia: Catsburg set for Lada Sport debut in Russia

Dutch driver Nick Catsburg replaces Mikhail Kozlovskiy in Lada Sport Rosneft's driver line-up as the team prepares for its home WTCC event
Lada Sport Rosneft has confirmed Nick Catsburg will join Rob Huff and Jaap van Lagen in its driver line-up for the team's home World Touring Car Championship event in Russia next week.

Catsburg will replace Mikhail Kozlovskiy at Lada Sport Rosenft's home round for the WTCC Race of Russia. Russian driver Kozlovskiy had contested the past two rounds for Lada Sport but only managed to bring the Vesta TC1 car home once, retiring from the three other races.

The 27-year-old Catsburg has enjoyed success in the Blancpain Endurance Series and VLN and has also competed in the European Le Mans Series and the Dutch GT championship, where he finished 3rd in 2012.

The Dutch driver says his debut in the WTCC will be a totally new experience but he is relishing the challenge.

“The Lada Vesta WTCC car is something completely new to me,” Catsburg said. “The first laps during the test in Magny-Cours where a big surprise, this car really requires a specific driving style with all that power on the front-axle.

“Once I got some more laps in, I started to get used to the car and the driving style, and really started to enjoy driving this car. Braking and the car's performance at high speed were very impressive.

“I am really looking forward to this completely new challenge for me. The race will of course be difficult, but with the help of the team and my experienced teammates I am sure we can do well."

The WTCC Race of Russia represents an important round for the Lada Sport squad as they will want to impress in front of its sponsors and fans at its home round.

“The Moscow WTCC round is obviously an important one to LADA and our main sponsor Rosneft, it is a real pleasure to share this event with them," Catsburg said. "I have looked at several on-boards from the Moscow Raceway Circuit and it looks very technical, I can't wait to get started.”

James Thompson started the WTCC season with Lada Sport but pulled out after two rounds and was replaced by van Lagen at the Nurburgring.
