Norbert Michelisz has fought off the charging Citroen drivers to take an unlikely pole position for Honda at its home event in the World Touring Car Championship at Twin Ring Motegi.
The Hungarian driver was the last to go out in the top five qualifying shootout and impressively displaced WTCC championship leader Jose Maria Lopez by 0.080s for memorable pole position for the Zengo Honda squad.
Michelisz, who has one WTCC race victory to his name in 2015, was the sole Honda into the top five, joined by a quartet of Citroens. The displaced Lopez will line-up alongside Michelisz on the front row after jumping ahead of Sebastien Loeb, Mehdi Bennani and Ma Qing Hua.
It was a frustrating qualifying for Yvan Muller, who sits second in the championship, after missing out on the top five and will start race one at Motegi in seventh. The former WTCC champion splits the two factory Honda machines of Gabriele Tarquini, sixth, and Tiago Monteiro in eighth.
Nicky Castburg impressed to put his Lada Vesta ninth as Hugo Valente rounded out the top ten in his Campos Chevrolet.
Le Mans 24 Hours LMP2 winner Nicolas Lapierre claimed 11th on the grid while British driver Tom Chilton suffered an issue in Q2 meaning he couldn't set a competitive time and will start 12th.
