James Thompson is set for a World Touring Car Championship return next week in Slovakia with the ALL-INKL.COM Munnich Motorsport Chevrolet squad deputising for Rene Munnich.
Thompson, a two-time BTCC champion, won the second-ever WTCC race in its revised series but for the past six years he has been on the peripheries of the international touring car scene predominately with Lada Sport.
After splitting from Lada three rounds into the 2015 season Thompson has been without a full-time drive and will return to action this weekend for the WTCC race of Slovakia in place of Munnich who has a commitment clash competing in the World Rallycross championship in Portugal.
Munnich team boss Dominik Greiner says he's thrilled to welcome the former factory Alfa Romeo and Lada driver to the team and is confident he can gel instantly with the Chevrolet RML Cruze TC1.
“We are very happy to welcome James Thompson to our team,” Greiner said. “Everybody at ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport is delighted to see 'Thommo' behind the wheel of the Chevrolet Cruze TC1. James is a true legend in touring cars with two BTCC titles and four WTCC race wins so far.
“The most important thing for James next weekend will be track time; to drive and learn the car. And in the races we hope that his great experience will help him to finish both races in a good position. For the moment it's only a one-off event for James but we have some more clashes for René in RX during the season so let's see how we all end up during the weekend.”
Munnich is expected to return to WTCC action for round three in Hungary on the 23-24 April.
