'Queen of the Ring' Sabine Schmitz will return to the World Touring Car Championship for another one-off appearance at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, it has been confirmed.
Having shot to fame with appearances on the Top Gear
TV show with her rapid laps around the notorious 14 mile Nordschleife configuration of the Nurburgring, Schmitz made her international racing debut in 2015 as part of WTCC's decision to return there.
Scoring a point for finishing tenth, Schmitz – who is now also part of the new-look Top Gear presenting team- will once more drive the Munnich Motorsport Chevrolet Cruze, though she admits she faces a challenge as she will be dovetailing her efforts with commitments in the Nurburgring 24 Hours held on the same weekend.
“I enjoyed it very much to compete against world champion touring car drivers on the best race circuit in the world, ” she said. “Because of my Top Gear commitments I haven't got the time to do the official test and Free Practice 1 on Thursday, which is a bit of a disaster because I need lots of practice in the Chevrolet as it's so different to the Porsche I'm usually driving.
“I will have a better chance if it rains so my hope is more water, more success! Whatever, I must be crazy to measure myself against these guys without the same amount of time to practice.”
