Jose Maria Lopez has claimed pole at the daunting Nurburgring Nordschleife by almost four seconds from team-mate Yvan Muller with Tom Coronel grabbing third.
The reigning World Touring Car Champion produced a blistering lap around the 12.9-mile marathon circuit to take both for both of Saturday's three-lap races with Citroen team-mate Muller alongside him on the front row.
Coronel claimed an impressive front of the second row start ahead of top Honda driver Norbert Michelisz. Sebastien Loeb Racing's Tom Chilton guided his Citroen to fifth on the grid in front of top Lada driver Nicky Catsburg.
Volvo driver Thed Bjork produced his best qualifying result of the year at the unique event with seventh ahead of factory Honda driver Rob Huff who suffered a crash midway through the session.
Seb Loeb Citroen's Mehdi Bennani and Honda's Tiago Monteiro completed the top ten, but it was a much more frustrating day for the Japanese manufacturer off the track after the FIA slammed both the factory squad and customer Zengo Motorsport team with en masse exclusions from the results of the WTCC races in Hungary and Morocco because of alleged floor irregularities.
