Tiago Monteiro has produced a flawless flyer to take pole position at his home event in World Touring Cars Championship at Vila Real after points leader Jose Maria Lopez slipped off in qualifying.
After a relatively straightforward opening two qualifying sessions saw the usual suspects progress into the pole shootout, with Lopez sneaking in thanks to a late lap to take fourth.
However, the Citroen driver made an error and locked up on his single pole shootout lap which forced him into the barriers and out of contention. Due to the WTCC qualifying format Lopez will still start from fifth place but now has a tricky task battling towards the front around the tight and twisty Portuguese street track.
With Lopez out of the running Honda Racing driver Monteiro took full advantage with a perfect qualifying lap to take pole by just over one-tenth from Citroen's Yvan Muller.
Honda has also locked out the second row for the main race with Norbert Michelisz third and Rob Huff fourth with Lopez duly settling for fifth.
