Jose Maria Lopez has secured pole position for the opening race of his home event at Termas de Rio Hondo while WTCC rookie Esteban Guerrieri lost out on a potential front row start after seeing his Superpole lap deleted.

After Guerrieri stunned the WTCC regulars by topping the free practice sessions in his maiden event he se a provisional pole benchmark of 1m 42.857s with only Lopez left to run.

However, his time was swiftly struck off after he was judged to have not stopped at pit exit before his out lap during Superpole.

As a result, Lopez's target for pole was made much easier, having to beat Norbert Michelisz's 1m 43.245s, and the factory Citroen driver completed the feat with 1m 43.044s.

Due to Superpole rules Guerrieri, who used to compete in Europe against current F1 stars Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo in the junior categories, was shuffled down to fifth behind Tom Coronel in third and Yvan Muller in fourth.

Rob Huff narrowly missed out on Superpole and will start race one from sixth ahead of Mehdi Bennani, Tiago Monteiro and Tom Chilton while John Filippi grabbed reserve pole with P10.
