Thed Bjork has recorded a historic maiden WTCC race win to mark his, Volvo's and Polestar Cyan Racing's first victory in the championship having joined the grid at the start of 2016.
Norbert Michelisz looked destined for his second straight opening race round win for Honda having grabbed to lead from John Filippi but after Tom Chilton and Gabriele Tarquini collided battling for second it was Bjork promoted to second in the closing stages.
With a greater late race pace Bjork edged past Michelisz on the penultimate corner despite sustaining damage in the clash but crossed the line just 0.361s ahead for an emotional win.
Yvan Muller, who announced his retirement from WTCC in China, almost stole the victory from the pair of the drivers at the chequered flag but had to settle for third place – just half a second off winner Bjork.
WTCC champion elect Jose Maria Lopez claimed fourth place ahead of Nicky Catsburg and Hugo Valente with Tom Coronel taking top independent honours. The returning Fredrik Ekblom secured eighth ahead of Rob Huff and Tiago Monteiro.
