World Touring Car Championship promoters have put forward its plan of implementing Joker Laps at temporary circuits on the 2017 race calendar.
World Touring Car Championship promoters have put forward its plan of implementing Joker Laps at temporary circuits on the 2017 race calendar.

At the World Motor Sport Council meeting which confirmed the 2017 FIA race calendars, WTCC has confirmed a 10-round season with a return to the iconic Macau meeting (subject to ASN confirmation).

Within the announcement an intriguing possibility of introducing World Rallycross-style Joker laps has arisen to spice up racing.

It would mean for one lap during a race each driver would have to take an alternate circuit route before returning to the normal circuit layout.

The suggestion has been approved by the World Motor Sport Council and the decision now rests on the FIA?s safety and circuit commissions team to decide where the idea can be implemented in 2017.

Other changes to a WTCC race weekend format have been confirmed with the points allocated to the Main Race increased for 2017 to recognise the greater value of the race compared to the opening race.

1st: 30 points

4th: 16
5th: 13

From the 2017 season, TCN-2 cars will be incorporated into WTCC events, under the ?WTCC 2? class; for which drivers? and teams? titles will be awarded.

This should result in a significant expansion of the grid for FIA World Touring Car Championship events.

Reigning WTCC champions Citroen have withdraw from the series for 2017 and are expected to be followed by Russian-outfit Lada.
