Tiago Monteiro has given his faithful Portuguese fans exactly what they wanted to see in the second World Touring Car race of the weekend at Estoril.

The home hero made the most of his reverse grid front row to overtake Felix Porteiro for the lead on the second lap and romp home a comfortable winner in front his adoring fans. The win signals his second of the season after his maiden WTCC triumph at Mexico earlier this season.

With Porteiro's rear-wheel drive BMW starting from pole position and Monteiro alongside him in the torquey diesel SEAT, the honours were relatively even off the line with the Spaniard slotting ahead of Monteiro and Andy Priaulx.

With the Leon struggling with tyre issues at the end of the first race, Monteiro was particularly eager to get past Porteiro on the first lap, with the former Formula 1 driver pulling alongside on several occasions but ultimate failing in his objective.

He eventually made a decisive move on lap two when he tracked Porteiro around the outside of the Parabolica Interior left-hander and swept through on the run down to Orelha. Although Porteiro gave chase initially, Monteiro was able to eke away relatively easily.

Compared to the chaotic first race, there were no such dramas further down the field over the first lap, although there were plenty of tussles to enjoy further down the order.

The battle for third was particularly noteworthy with Priaulx fending off the attentions of Yvan Muller, who in turn had just overtaken team-mate Jordi Gene. With the Frenchman making the most of his car's fresh tyres and superior straight line speed, he too got past Priaulx into third place on lap three.

However, with Muller, carrying plenty of success ballast after finishing third in the first race, evidently struggling with his brakes, Priaulx was straight back on his tail and chasing him for the remainder of the race.

Nonetheless, Muller's strength in a straight line was enough to prevent Priaulx from ever getting close enough to get a clean shot at an overtake. In fact, Priaulx's best chance came on the penultimate lap when Muller caught Porteiro as the Spaniard seemingly began struggling with tyre woes.
