Hernandez secures maiden victory at Brno

Sergio Hernandez has picked up his maiden victory in the World Touring Car Championship after securing a second win of the weekend for the BMW Team-Italy Spain squad at Brno.

The Spaniard started the race from the second row of the grid but jumped ahead of Yvan Muller on the opening lap and then set about challenging Independent runner Felix Porteiro for the lead.

Hernandez made his move for the lead as the pair entered the fourth lap and was finally able to make the move stick before pulling out a lead, while Porteiro lost momentum and dropped behind Yvan Muller and Tiago Monteiro.

The SEAT pair were unable to match Hernandez for pace, while Porteiro did his best to get onto the podium but ultimately had to settle for fourth place.

The battle behind proved to be the main focus of attention, with SEAT pair Gabriele Tarquini and Rickard Rydell going up against BMW duo Jorg Muller and Andy Priaulx. Muller and Priaulx had been fighting over the position but when they delayed each other, the SEAT pair came through to take fifth and sixth, with Muller finishing ahead of Priaulx for seventh.

Race one winner Alex Zanardi failed to finish the race after being fired off by Tarquini; the SEAT man rejoining after running wide and clattering into the BMW, while Augusto Farfus completed a miserable weekend by retiring at the end of the opening lap.

Having seen all three cars caught up in the accident at the start of race one, Chevrolet were unable to break into the points from the rear of the field, with Rob Huff the highest placed Cruze in twelfth.
