Farfus secures victory in second Porto race

Augusto Farfus took his second win of the World Touring Car Championship season during the second race of the weekend on the streets of Porto.

The Brazilian had started from pole after BMW tactics allowed him to finish race one in eighth place, and he pulled away at the start ahead of Rickard Rydell, Jordi Gene, Yvan Muller and Tiago Monteiro.

However, Farfus' advantage was nullified following an accident on lap three that led to the Safety Car being deployed after Nicola Larini and Gabriele Tarquini tangled – with Tarquini trying to follow Rob Huff through past the Italian. Independent driver Mehdi Bennani tried to go between Tarquini and Larini as the field came past the two cars but he rejoined the racing line right in front of Tom Boardman and heavy contact between the SEAT drivers led to the race going under caution.

Farfus maintained his lead at the restart as SEAT shuffled the pack behind but the race was then stopped following an accident involving Franz Engstler and Alain Menu which saw Menu go off heavily into the barriers and block the track with his Cruze. The race resumed with two laps remaining and Farfus was able to secure victory ahead of Muller, who was allowed through to second by his team-mates to increase his points tally.

Rydell took third from Gene and Monteiro, while Rob Huff, Andy Priaulx and Jorg Muller rounded out the points – the latter pair being rewarded with some points for helping Farfus in race one.

Stefano D'Aste took Independent honours in ninth place, while James Thompson again made it to the finish in the new LADA Priora.

Another good job at trying to wipe out half the field again Augusto. Perhaps when you learn how to not hit the others you might be able to win it without your team mates gifting you points.
