Farfus closes in with third win
19 July 2009
Augusto Farfus has taken his third victory of the World Touring Car Championship season in race two at Brands Hatch to close the gap on championship leader Yvan Muller.
A fine recovery drive in race one after being caught up in an incident on the opening lap saw Farfus take eighth in the race and pole for race two – with the Brazilian making the most of his position to lead the race in its entirety.
The Brazilian held the lead from the start ahead of team-mate Jorg Muller, with the pair pulling away at the front after an early Safety Car period to allow the Air Ambulance to leave the circuit to take Formula 2 racer Henry Surtees to hospital after a horrific accident in an earlier race, where the son of former F1 champion John Surtees was hit by an errant wheel after fellow Briton Jack Clarke went off into the barriers. There has currently been no update on Surtees' condition.
After the restart, the pair pulled away at the front and were unchallenged in the run to the flag, but the battle for third was more heated, with Tiago Monteiro holding the place early on before he allowed Rickard Rydell through and then slipped down the order as the race progressed.
Rydell would ultimately allow Gabriele Tarquini through to complete the podium with the Swede finishing fourth ahead of Andy Priaulx, who found himself battling with the SEAT drivers throughout the race but had to settle for fifth place. Rob Huff took sixth while Yvan Muller produced a fine drive to come through the field and take seventh having been granted a place on the final lap by Monteiro, who took eighth.
Sergio Hernandez was ninth ahead of leading Independent Tom Boardman as the British driver took victory on home soil after a heated battle with team-mate Tom Coronel and BMW pair Felix Porteiro and Stefano D'Aste.
