Farfus moves into contention with win

Augusto Farfus has moved to within striking distance of the World Touring Car Championship lead after winning his fourth race of the season at the Oschersleben.

The Brazilian made the most of his third position on the grid, a reward for his storming drive to sixth after an earlier delay in the first race, to snatch the lead on lap four and never look back.

Leading a BMW 1-2, Andy Priaulx backed him up in second position to take an impressive 18 point haul away from Germany, the Guernseyman having made a great start from eighth on the grid to climb his way up the order.

His cause was aided by problems for the two front row sitters, Franz Engstler and Stefano D'Aste. Engstler was doing a fine job in the lead of the race for four laps before Farfus found his way through, but his hopes of holding onto an overall podium were dashed by a driveshaft problem.

D'Aste was similarly competitive compared to the front runners, but he was given a drive-thru penalty because his team were still working on his car on the grid when the one minute board had been shown.

As such, new championship leader Gabriele Tarquini completed his second podium finish of the day in third place, the Italian holding a slim two point advantage over Farfus in the standings, with erstwhile leader Yvan Muller is a further five points adrift.

Perhaps the most notable performance of the race, however, was that of Jorg Muller, who muscled his way through to a superb fourth having started at the back of the grid following his race one retirement. With Sergio Hernandez in fifth place, BMW would leave their home race with a 1-2-4-5 result.

Nicola Larini completed a double points haul for himself on an otherwise tough weekend for Chevrolet in sixth, while Yvan Muller put in a fighting performance from the back of the grid to scrounge two points in seventh. Tom Coronel scored the eighth and final point to mark a double Independents' Trophy win – he now leads the standings but isn't confirmed to compete for two of the remaining three rounds.
