Alex Yoong had to make do with seventh on the grid for his home round of the A1 Grand Prix Championship at Sepang, Malaysia, following a 'difficult' session that forced him to make a last gasp bid for the top ten.

A much anticipated return to home ground for Team Malaysia following their double win in the Czech Republic, Yoong was hoping to translate his encouraging practice form into a strong qualifying result, but instead struggled over the first half of the four timed sessions.

Indeed, with the conditions changing as the session continued, Yoong was forced to save his best till last, managing his best aggregate times at the third and fourth attempt, going against the general run of play.

Nonetheless, Yoong is confident there is more to come from his package and is chasing a strong result in the sprint event to delight home fans.

"It was a very difficult session, with the conditions changing a lot and whilst there wasn't any rain, the sun came out and made it very hot for the last two sessions. We saved our new tyres for those last two sessions.

"Seventh on the grid is still up there and we can still have a very good result. We'll work on a race set up for tomorrow and we will aim for a good result for our home fans."
