Rewarding the fans that have made A1 GP's maiden trip to Taupo a sell-out, Jonny Reid put his 'Black Beauty' New Zealand car on the second row of the grid following an eventful qualifying session.

Returning to his home circuit after claiming a double victory at Sentul, Reid was hoping to translate his dominant pace from Indonesia to Taupo but struggled initially in his first practice session on Friday.

Nonetheless, vital changes to the car saw Reid come out fighting in final practice before qualifying, setting the fastest time to mark himself out as a challenger for pole position.

Indeed, the fourth fastest time in the first segment and the fastest time in the second put Reid second on the grid initially, just behind France's Loic Duval, and with the circuit getting quicker as the hour wore on, hopes in the team were high that he could ring a few more tenths out of the car.

However, a mistake in the third segment put pressure on Reid to deliver in the fourth and final session, only for the remote starter mechanism to fail and force the team to borrow a new one from Super Nova counterparts Germany. Getting out onto the circuit just in time, Reid was fourth quickest in the segment with a time that would count towards his aggregate marker.

Indeed, while frustrated with his performance, Reid was content in third place with all things considered, not least because it the highest starting position for any home nation since A1 GP began.

"I'm a little bit disappointed," he said. "It didn't run too smoothly compared to the morning practice. But, given the incidents, I'll take third. I've got a bit of work to do to win the race, but I'll be pushing 100% to put Black Beauty out the front."
