A1 Team China has confirmed that Frankie Cheng will be its number one driver for the third season of A1GP competition.

Cheng, currently leading the National Class standings in the British F3 International Series, took part in twelve A1GP races last season for the Chinese and secured a best finish of fourth in the sprint race at Brno.

Having shown his talents at the wheel, seat holder Liu Yu said he had no doubt Cheng is the right person to lead the team into the new season - which gets underway at Zandvoort in September.

"Motorsports in China is still at its early stage and Frankie is currently the best driver to represent China in A1GP," he said. "We also had a plan to improve the performance of our technical team, so there will always be a good car ready for Frankie.

"Our new goal will be winning a race next season. Then more Chinese people will notice that their kids can have a future in motorsports and we will have a bigger driver pool in five years."

Cheng himself said he was delighted to have been given the chance to lead the Chinese entry and said he was aware of the fact that the team would be looking to him to raise its profile on home soil.

"This is my first year in British F3, and I am getting faster and faster in the last few races," he said. "It is my great honour to be part of A1 Team China again, what I experienced last season made me realise that I must do better job this year to get more A1GP fans in China."
