Avon Tyres has clinched a deal to supply International Formula Three-spec tyres to the new Volkswagen A3 Racing series, which begins its inaugural season in South Africa this July.

A joint venture between A1 Grand Prix and Volkswagen South Africa, the A3 series has been created as a stepping-stone formula for talented young drivers hopeful of progressing to A1 Grand Prix's international stage. Both the physical and mental skills required for top level racing will be honed by a series of races at circuits around South Africa, combined with three separate ten-day training sessions.

Avon has a distinguished and proud heritage in motorsport, with a catalogue of successes in single-seater racing. It has been the official British F3 tyre supplier for 23 years and, last season, 150 Avon-shod racers took championship titles across the globe.

"Avon's agreement to supply the Volkswagen A3 Racing series is testament to our commitment to motorsport and the development of up and coming young talent," marketing director Julian Baldwin commented, "Our motorsport pedigree, and our willingness to keep the brand at the forefront of the best, and most demanding, championships in the world will help establish A3 as a valuable training arena for motor racing superstars of the future."

The announcement of the partnership between Avon and A3 comes shortly after a similar agreement that will see the British GT championship switch to Avon tyres for the 2006-08 seasons.
