Malaysia's Fairuz Fauzy only tested the A1 Grand Prix car for the first time last week but, after completing two-and-a-half days alongside Alex Yoong at Paul Ricard, has marked himself out as a contender for race outings this season.

The GP2 regular admitted that he had been extremely impressed by both the car and the series, but also made his own impression on the men running A1 Team Malaysia, which will feature among the 25 participants when the series kicks off at Brands Hatch next month.

"The A1GP car is one of the most powerful cars I have driven in my racing career - and one of the best as well," Fauzy said of the Lola-Zytek combination, "The reliability and performance is so impressive. I felt very comfortable, both in the car and with the team, over the three days and am looking forward to the start of the season in just a month's time. The series will no doubt go far, looking at the efforts that A1GP and all the teams have put into the test."

Team Malaysia boss Jack Cunningham had been aware of Fauzy's potential before he joined the test, but was further convinced of his potential when the Malaysian clocked the ninth fastest time of the Ricard test to head off many of the more fancied combinations.

"Fairuz has shown through his three days' work that he is a really top-class driver," Cunningham admitted, "We are exceptionally fortunate to have two drivers of this calibre in A1 Team Malaysia in Fairuz and Alex."
