Brit Robbie Kerr set the fastest time in the first session and the sixth fastest time in the second session as the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport got underway at the German race track of the Lausitzring on Friday.

A foggy morning at the former Eastern German track turned to brilliant sunshine in time for the two practice sessions, allowing the team to put in 19 laps in the first one-hour session session, following standard checks after a new engine was installed, and set the fastest time to top the sheets 0.023secs ahead of closest rival France.

Session two was used to work on car balance on used tyres but, despite this, Robbie Kerr still made the top six, although his time from the earlier session earned the Briton third overall for the day.

Despite a slightly longer track than Brands Hatch, the time separating the top ten dropped dramatically to under one second, promising close racing this weekend.

After showing so well in his home event two weeks ago, it was a happy Kerr at the end of play at the circuit in the former East Germany.

"Obviously, it went well in the first session as I was quickest, but we have still got work to do," he said afterwards. "It was good that the time was fast enough to put us third overall at the end of the day.

"For session two, we worked on getting a balance on older tyres. We ended up sixth fastest in the second session which isn't too bad but not where we want to be. We know what is making the difference now and so can move forward and tomorrow we are determined to stay at the top of the time sheets."
