Giorgio Mondini's month took another upturn today [Friday] when he was confirmed as A1 Team Switzerland's choice to replace F1-bound Neel Jani for the final two rounds of the season.

Just two weeks ago, the 25-year old was added to Midland F1's testing roster, with the promise of at least nine Friday morning outings at grands prix this year, and has now beaten off the threat of F3 graduate Romain Grosjean to substitute for Jani, who departs to concentrate on his third driver role with Scuderia Toro Rosso. While the former GP2 race winner will race in Mexico next weekend, Mondini - who raced in both GP2 and the Renault World Series in 2005 - will be behind the wheel for the rounds at Laguna Seca and Shanghai.

"The team is in a strong position in the championship and we are working hard to close the gap to A1 Team France," commented team principal Max Welti, "I'm confident that Giorgio Mondini will settle into the team quickly, and will be the perfect driver to continue building our challenge for the title."

Switzerland is currently second in the championship, having closed to within 28 points of championship leaders France after the eighth round, in Indonesia, last weekend.
