Former Formula One driver Max Papis has signalled his intent to represent his country at the next race of the A1 Grand Prix at Laguna Seca, after being spotted in the paddock for the latest round of the championship in Mexico.

Having raced for Arrows in the mid-90s, the Italian driver would replace either Enrico Toccacelo or Max Busnelli, with Papis hoping his experience from his Champ Car days around the twists and turns of Laguna Seca will persuade bosses for a one-off appearance.

Indeed, Papis has an impressive record at the Californian circuit having won there on his first attempt in a Champ Car, while last year he won the Laguna round of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge series for Team Cadillac.

"I'm really excited by A1 Grand Prix," he told a1gp.com. "I'm hoping that I will get the drive. The formula looks really good, as there's not too much technology and not too little."

If Papis were to race at Laguna Seca, he would become the sixth former Formula One driver on the grid, following Jos Verstappen, Christian Fittipaldi, Ralph Firman, Alex Yoonh and Patrick Friesacher.
