The latest round of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport - which was due to take place next weekend at Laguna Seca - has been cancelled.

Crash.net understands that the teams have been informed of the decision with an official announcement due in the not too distant future to confirm the cancellation and - more importantly - the reasons behind it.

Although speculation has suggested that safety concerns surrounding the Californian venue are behind the decision, rumours are already circulating that the reasons for the cancellation could have a more serious bearing on the future of the championship - with a worst case scenario being that Mexico played host to the final A1GP meeting just a week ago.

The American round will become the second race meeting of the inaugural season to be cancelled - with the Brazilian round, due to be held on 12 February, having been removed from the calendar back in December.

A number of teams have also hit problems in the first year of competition - with Japan, Russia, India and Pakistan all having missed meetings for a variety of reasons.
