Despite extensive knowledge of the circuit, Patrick Carpentier could get no higher than 18th on the grid for the Laguna Seca round of the A1 Grand Prix championship.

Having endured a difficult debut last time out in Mexico, Carpentier was hoping for better luck around a more familiar circuit but the Canadian driver could not translate his morning practice pace into a decent qualifying position, coincidently between two former Champ Car rivals, America's Bryan Herta in 17th and Brazil's Christian Fittipaldi in 19th.

"I'm disappointed to be starting that far back," he said, "we ran a one minute 16.440 at the end there which isn't too bad but overall the times were too inconsistent. We tried a couple of changes to the car but they didn't help us. I'm sure we'll work out way to the front when we go racing tomorrow."
