Salvador Duran left it late before slicing past France's Nicholas Lapierre to complete a fantastic debut double win for the Mexican nation at Laguna Seca on Sunday.

Lying second at the conclusion of a mid race safety car period, Duran looked like finishing second behind the newly crowned A1 champions until Lapierre uncharacteristically went off course with just three of 40 laps remaining. France's departure left the way open for Duran to take an unchallenged win.

Team Germany's Timo Scheider came through to finish second, a best ever for his country while Great Britain's Robbie Kerr all but guaranteed the UK third place in the final standings with another podium finish behind Scheider.

Alvaro Parente and Patrick Carpentier completed the top five for Portugal and Canada respectively with Ralph Firman rounding out the top six.
