Team Germany is expecting to launch a strong challenge in the forthcoming A1GP campaign, with a trio of talented drivers and high hopes for the season ahead.

The squad struggled throughout A1GP's inaugural year, ending up only 15th in the standings, but rookie Nico H?lkenberg gave them reason for cheer by recording the fastest lap time on the second day of the pre-season Silverstone test. The Formula BMW ADAC champion will link up with Arden GP2 star Michael Ammerm?ller and debut season star Timo Scheider, a DTM veteran of almost six years, when the new campaign gets underway in Zandvoort on 1 October.

"We have united the strongest components for the new season," explained team principal Willi Weber. "Thanks to the wealth of experience gained in racing over the years, David Sears' Supernova team proved to be invaluable in our debut year and will again run our car.

"Timo Scheider, who helped us to our best result last season with second position at Laguna Seca and who has claimed several good results since then in the DTM, is a known quantity in A1 Team Germany.

"I'm delighted that with Michael Ammerm?ller and Nico H?lkenberg we have also gained the services of two of Germany's most promising single-seater young talents for our team. With this line-up we want to fight regularly for the top positions during the forthcoming season."

"I watched the series with great interest last winter," Red Bull Junior ace Ammerm?ller added. "Now I can look forward to starting for the German team. The car feels similar to a GP2 race car.

"If you compare who was running when, and with new or old tyres, A1 Team Germany was always amongst the leading group at the test. It was a good start to the new season."

H?lkenberg was also predicting an exciting challenge ahead, with the 19-year-old waxing lyrical about his first taste of the 550bhp A1 machine, the most powerful car of his short motor racing career.

"That was an incredible experience," he enthused. "It was great fun, and the gear shift paddles on the steering wheel were excellent. I got used to the car quickly even though my fastest race car was only a Formula 3. I was at Silverstone for the first time and I really like the circuit."
