Shane Byrne continued to command a position at the top of the British Superbike timesheets following second free practice at Thruxton.

Having been a comfortable four tenths up on the competition in FP1, Byrne faced a tough challenge from Tommy Hill as the Swan Yamaha rider held the top spot for much of the session. Nonetheless, it was the former champion that would eventually prevail with a late 1min 15.248secs, three tenths up on Hill.

Hill held a lonely second, four tenths ahead of team-mate Michael Laverty in third, while James Westmoreland and Peter Hickman continued to impress on their respective Yamaha and Honda machines in fourth and fifth.

Having been third fastest this morning, John Hopkins slipped to sixth, ahead of the Rapid Bathams Ducatis of Martin Jessopp and Michael Rutter, while Croft race winner Jon Kirkham popped up into the top ten in ninth.

Elsewhere, Ian Lowry lifted Buildbase BMW into the top ten for the first time this season in tenth, ahead of Chris Walker on the Pr1mo Kawasaki, the improving Loris Baz and also Alex Lowes, the new MSS Colchester Kawasaki rider moving up to 13th, ahead of Ryuichi Kiyonari and team-mate Gary Mason.

In the EVO class, Graeme Gowland was fastest for WFR Honda, ahead of Simon Andrews and Scott Smart.
