Josh Brookes says he cannot afford anything less than victory next time out at Silverstone after a lacklustre weekend at Assen left him with just a fourth place finish.

Anticipated to take the fight to Shane Byrne and Alex Lowes, Brookes struggled for front-running pace throughout the weekend at Assen, finishing a very distant fourth in race one behind his main title rivals.

Determined to make amends in race two, Brookes looked on course to capitalise on Byrne's DNF as he hauled himself into the top three, but a mistake on lap eight at the final corner chicane would see him into a costly retirement.

Though Alex Lowes's exclusion would serve to keep things relatively tight in the standings, Brookes admits he needs to up his game for the penultimate event at Silverstone.

"It certainly wasn't an ideal weekend for me, but with Alex getting excluded from the race two results we're still in the championship hunt. The crash in race two was just down to me trying as hard as I could to gain maximum points and I just over-rode slightly.

"That's the nature of the Showdown, we all want to win and I'm sure it was great viewing for the fans but the focus is now on Silverstone where we need to be winning races if we're to go to Brands with a chance of winning this championship."
