Christian Iddon has stormed ahead at the top of the timesheet after the first day of the 2016 MCE British Superbike championship at the season opener at Silverstone, fending off a late challenge from Luke Mossey.

The new Tyco BMW rider has impressed during pre-season testing with his outright pace and has repeated the feat with a late flyer in mixed conditions at the Northamptonshire circuit as the BSB field adjusted to the changeable weather.

2015 BSB Riders' Cup winner Mossey also punched in a late quick lap but missed out on top spot by less than two-tenths, with the pair clearing the rest of the field by over half a second as John Hopkins claimed third on the ePayMe Yamaha.

Shane Byrne produced consistency lap times during a longer stint and ended the day fourth overall ahead of Honda Racing's Jason O'Halloran to make it five different manufacturers taking the top five spots.

FP1's quickest rider Jakub Smrz claimed sixth place for Smiths BMW ahead of BSB returnee Leon Haslam and Tyco BMW's Michael Laverty. Haslam's JG Speedfit Kawasaki team-mate James Ellison took ninth as Martin Jessopp completed the top ten, edging out Ryuichi Kiyonari and Peter Hickman on identical times.

Despite mixed conditions and rain-threatening clouds overhead the BSB field took the opportunity for some early laps after FP1's stoppages with Kiyonari leading proceedings before Byrne narrowly pipped him with a 2m 08.079s.

Mossey became the first rider to duck into the 2m 07s bracket but his time at the top was short-lived as Byrne set a new fastest lap two-hundredths up on the Quattro Plant Kawasaki rider despite drops of rain flagged at sector two.

After the threat of rain relented the shortened session, FP2 had to be trimmed by five minutes due to earlier delays, the final ten minutes quickly brought in the qualifying simulation runs with Iddon, Hopkins and Smrz all jumping to the top.

As the chequered flag was flown Iddon held top spot and held off a late challenge from Mossey to grab the headlines on the opening day of the 2016 season.
