Cameron's Castle Eden Honda rider Russ Hodgson travelled to Oulton Park in Cheshire to contest the MRO 125cc Championship race yesterday and came away with a brilliant second place finish.

Without the services of regular mechanic Jason Dobson for the weekend, the 21 year old from Yarm overcame poor handling and suspension problems during practice to qualify second on the grid behind National Champion Chris Martin.

In the race, Hodgson managed to get his trademark good start to lead on the opening lap before Martin hit the front and was never headed but behind, a battle royal was taking place between Hodgson and fellow National 125cc racer Howie Mainwaring.

Try as he might, Russ couldn't shake off the attentions of the local teenager and allowed Mainwaring to pass him going into the final lap but his race craft paid off perfectly and Hodgson swept past into second with a couple of corners to go.

"I really laid it down on those final few corners and could have easily crashed but I was determined to beat Howie. There was no living with Chris Martin today so I'm really pleased with second place," said Russ afterwards.

Hodgson now goes into the final round of the National 125cc Championship at Donington Park this weekend hoping he can score at least a rostrum position after coming so very close last time out at Mallory Park.
