Shane Byrne has taken control in the MCE British Superbike title race with a double victory weekend at Donington Park to move 27 points clear of Leon Haslam after his crash in race two.

Having produced a masterful race management to claim victory in the opener to halt Haslam's winning streak from Oulton Park, he bolted to the front and after a frantic battle with Haslam and James Ellison to blast to a double to record his ninth win of the season.

Coupled with Haslam's fall in race two Byrne effectively has a whole race win in the pocket over his Showdown rivals with five races remaining.

"It has been a great weekend. Smashing the bike up in FP1 wasn't ideal and with the weather much cooler on Friday and Saturday it was hard to gauge what tyre to use," Byrne said. "If I can ride on my own the Ducati looks after the tyres really well but when I'm stuck in a battle it hurts which was present at Oulton Park.

"With the sunny weather today it played into my hands because the Pirelli P Zero tyre doesn't have the longevity but has more performance initially. The second race was tougher sitting in third and I knew there would be some harsh moves. I wanted to make sure when I got through I could get my head down to make a breakaway.

"It is a great start to the Showdown for us but there are still five tough races to go so fingers crossed we'll still be where we are now."
