The official MCE British Superbike championship pre-season test day at Donington Park was hampered by rain which curtailed any serious running for a number of riders as the 2017 grid came together for the first time.

After a very cold opening session only saw a handful of riders head out, with defending champion Shane Byrne topping the times, the second session was hit by forecasted rain midway through which scratched out any potential for representative lap times.

Tyco BMW's Christian Iddon topped the second session with a 1m 42.674s - 14 seconds off the pole position time from last season's BSB qualifying session at the Leicestershire track - as once again only a number of BSB riders opted to test out conditions. As rain took hold of the venue for the opening round of the 2017 season, Iddon's effort remained the best of the one-day test with the third session run in heavy rain.

It was 2015 BSB champion Josh Brookes who topped the final session with a best effort of 1m 52.044s, ten seconds off Iddon's second session time, as a number of teams opted to not to risk running in the soaking conditions.

Ex-World Superbike stars Sylvain Guintoli and Davide Giugliano turned laps for Bennetts Suzuki and Tyco BMW respectively with the 2014 World Superbike champion's best effort a quarter of a second off Brookes and Giugliano a further second off in third place.

JG Speedfit Kawasaki riders Luke Mossey and Leon Haslam plus Honda Racing pair Dan Linfoot and Jason O'Halloran also notched up a solid amounts of laps as they finalised their preparations for the 2017 opener in just over a week's time.

Tommy Bridewell, James Westmoreland, Christian Iddon and Shaun Winfield also completed laps in the final session without challenging the top times.

The BSB grid returns to Donington Park this afternoon before the day wraps up in preparation for the 2017 season opener at the same track on the 31st March - 2nd April.
