Rizla Suzuki star John Reynolds has had a disastrous start to his 2003 British Superbike campaign today [Saturday], after breaking his left collarbone in qualifying for tomorrow's races at Silverstone.

Reynolds went into his first flying lap during the Dunlop Super 12 pumped up to get pole position. When he got to Priory corner, he suffered a tumble from his Rizla Suzuki GSX-R1000.

He was later taken to hospital for examination and will not be able to race tomorrow.

"I am gutted," said Reynolds. "I so wanted to get pole position and win races and now I cannot race tomorrow because of a broken collarbone. I was going for a very fast lap and I fell off the bike. I knew immediately that I had hurt my collarbone.

"I am so disappointed I am not racing tomorrow and I am very sorry to my fans who are coming to cheer me on. I can promise that I will be back on the bike as soon as it is physically possible. Tomorrow I will be wishing the Rizla Suzuki team and Yuki [Kagayama - my team-mate] the very best of luck for the race."

Team Manager Paul Denning, who at least had the consolation of seeing Kagayama take third on the grid, commented: "Today has been a mixture of ups and downs.

"Yuki's ride to third on the grid is outstanding given it is his first visit to the track. John's crash and broken collarbone on the other hand is a blow to the entire team.

"John went out to get pole position and knew he could do it - all weekend he has never been lower than third on the time sheets. He crashed during his first flying lap - the first time he's crashed the new bike, and in what can only be described as unbelievably bad luck, he has broken his collarbone. Right now the entire team is supporting him in his bid to heal quickly and get back on track as soon as possible.

"Yuki has been brilliant this weekend and he is going faster with every session. He's starting from third and a strong position on the grid. Yuki is an exciting racer who has impressed the whole team with his methodical approach to riding and improving his bike. We are sure he will represent the team well as our sole rider tomorrow."

Rizla will not be able to use a replacement rider for Reynolds as it is too late.
