Team Vitrans' Michael Laverty clinched a magnificent third place in Sunday's eighth round of the British Supersport championship at Mondello Park, Ireland.

The Irishman actually took the lead on the opening lap and led for four laps before problems with brakes set him back, but he still managed to finish on the podium following a last lap coming together between Karl Harris and Tom Sykes.

"I was disappointed with my grid position [fourth] and was hoping for a bit better on my home track. But it's good to be back in the top positions after a lean period," said Laverty, who recorded his best result since victory in round two at Snetterton.

Team-mate Dean Thomas did not enjoy the best of days, handling problems forcing the Australian to finish 13th from a grid position of 11th. Lingering problems with one of Thomas' bikes persists following a crash at Rockingham in round seven.

"I am very disappointed as I could have finished ahead of Simon Andrews but it was not to be," said Thomas who slips to fifth in the overall standings with 71 points, two points behind Laverty in fourth.

The next stop for the team is Brands Hatch with both riders taking part in round nine of the World Supersport championship on 27 July. Thomas finished 13th at Silverstone in round six of the series while Laverty retired after 16 laps.

Dean Thomas will be hoping for more success at Brands Hatch following his dramatic, last-lap victory there in round six of the British Supersport championship. "We are hoping for two top 10 positions at Brands," said team co-ordinator, Sally Roberts.
