Luke Mossey has topped the timesheet at JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s home round in the opening free practice session at Thruxton as the MCE British Superbike grid gets up to speed at the challenging Hampshire circuit.

With Thruxton providing unique tests to BSB riders due to the abrasive surface and higher tyre wear, the majority of teams focused on adjustment base set-ups before hunting outright fastest times in FP1.

In the closing minutes of the first session Mossey darted to the top of the times with a 1m 15.213s – over a second off of the outright lap record – followed by Billy McConnell for an impressive start for FS-3 Racing Quattro Kawasaki.

After Shane Byrne edged the early pace, Josh Brookes bolted to the front by becoming the first rider to jump into the 1m 15s bracket in a relatively uneventful opening 30 minutes of the opening free practice session at Thruxton in warm and sunny conditions – until Mossey sharpened the one lap pace to grab the headlines.

Dan Linfoot carried his momentum of a first podium of 2017 from Brands Hatch to Thruxton with third in FP1 for Honda ahead of fellow Showdown challenger Peter Hickman on the Smiths Racing BMW.

Jakub Smrz claimed an impressive fifth for Lloyd & Jones/PR Racing BMW after sitting out Brands Hatch GP due to an injury, while Josh Brookes got back up to speed on the Anvil Hire Yamaha in sixth.

After being shuffled down the running order late on having not gone for an outright fast lap at the end of the session, Byrne settled in sixth place ahead of Be Wiser Ducati team-mate Glenn Irwin as Honda’s Jason O’Halloran and Moto Rapido Ducati’s John Hopkins completed the top ten.
