Fresh from his first victory of the 2017 MCE British Superbike championship and a dominant performance at the Ulster Grand Prix, Peter Hickman has continued to lead the way by topping the opening practice session at Cadwell Park.

Hickman has produced a blitzing run of form in recent weeks both on the roads and in BSB and maintained it with a flying late lap to go top with a 1m 27.150s and despite Glenn Irwin’s last lap effort he could only move 0.040s to within Hickman’s pace-setter.

Irwin’s Be Wiser Ducati team-mate Shane Byrne looked to have shaken off a frustrating Thruxton round by setting the early pace but while on his late fast lap he tipped off at the bottom of the iconic Mountain jump to ruin the lap. Byrne was okay to continue back to the pits and ended the session third.

Sole flying JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider Leon Haslam claimed fourth with team-mate Luke Mossey out injured while top six Showdown stalker Jake Dixon started strongly with fifth on the RAF Reserves Kawasaki.

John Hopkins continued to impress with sixth in FP1 for Moto Rapido Ducati ahead of Christian Iddon on the Tyco BMW, as Jason O’Halloran led the Honda Racing charge looking to repeat his double podium from 12 months ago at Cadwell Park.

James Ellison produced a much stronger start to the race weekend in ninth on the McAMS Yamaha after a disastrous Thruxton round as Martin Jessopp rounded out the top ten on the Ridersmotorcycles.com BMW.
