Shane Byrne says he hasn’t been able to uncover the same confidence with the front-end feeling from his Be Wiser Ducati from a recent in-season test after topping Friday practice at Cadwell Park ahead of round eight of the 2017 MCE British Superbike championship.

The five-time and defending BSB champion wants to recover from a frustrating Thruxton round last time out when he failed to reach the rostrum, hampered by tyre issues in race two, and has started on the front foot at Cadwell Park by topping the combined times with a best lap of 1m 26.516s to narrowly edge out Jake Dixon on the RAF Reserves Kawasaki by 0.030s.

Byrne is assured more pace is to come having lapped faster at a recent in-season test at the Lincolnshire circuit and is focusing on finding a comfortable balance on his Panigale R before attacking for faster times.

“Honestly, it hasn’t gone that well at all,” Byrne said. “We had a pretty difficult first session which continued into the second session. We played about with the balance of the bike to try to get a feel from the front of the bike and a better balance between the front and the rear of the bike.

“We only used one tyre this morning which was good because then we could use two for this afternoon. I feel like we are being held back a little bit at the minute so we will come up with a plan tonight. It was still at good FP2 to be top but it is only Friday so we will keep chipping away.

“I was fast here in the test a month ago, faster than today, and I felt good then but I feel dreadful on the bike today so we have some work to do but we will get it done for this weekend.”
