Josh Brookes says only race wins and a bit of good fortune will do for his 2017 MCE British Superbike championship charge at the Brands Hatch season finale.

The 2015 BSB champion is 32 points adrift of leader Leon Haslam heading into the three-race final, while he is just one point in front of defending champion Shane Byrne, as he carries Anvil Hire Yamaha’s hopes of a shock title triumph for the privateer squad against the factory-backed teams.

The experienced Brookes sealed his 2015 title in an emphatic fashion the last time he contested the final BSB round at Brands Hatch when he won Saturday’s opening race to take the crown with two races to spare. However, due to the points deficit to Haslam and Byrne’s charge in third the title fight could go down to a final race decider for the first time since 2013 when Alex Lowes triumphed.

Brookes is solely focused on race wins and a slice of luck to reel in Haslam in the points standings and is relishing the challenge.

“The emphasis at Brands Hatch is going to be more for me to win and then hope that we are lucky as mathematically there is a gap in the points between myself and Leon,” Brookes said. “We can only focus on the job we can do and that is to go to Brands Hatch and try and win all three races.

“Any position this season is hard to achieve as it is so close but we need to bring the most energy, focus and determination to Brands Hatch and hope that we have that luck.

“I think looking ahead to the weekend we should all reflect on the battle between Tommy Hill and John Hopkins because I think the final round will be reminiscent of that. Whoever it is between at the end I think the racing is going to be brilliant and it certainly won’t let the fans down.”
