Shane Byrne accepts he’ll require a similar result to his victory in race one of the MCE British Superbike championship season finale in order to reverse the 21-point deficit to Leon Haslam to hunt down a sixth title.

The defending BSB champion dominated to his first victory since July at his home circuit and coupled with Haslam’s fourth place finish he has taken 12 points out of the JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s riders advantage with two races remaining.

If Byrne can replicate the same results in both races tomorrow, taking victory and Haslam finishing off of the rostrum, he can overhaul the BSB championship leader to take the title in the final race of the year.

As a result, Byrne accepts his job is effectively a third of the way complete but has gained added confidence having controlled from the front for victory in the Brands Hatch opener.

“All we have done so far is put a 12-point dent in Leon’s lead so that is 21 points still to go to overhaul him,” Byrne said. “The only way we are going to do that is repeat what we have done today. Christian and Josh were super-fast today and there were plenty of other fast guys out there too so I need to try to beat them all tomorrow.

“It is going to be difficult tomorrow but we will push as hard as we can but my bike was great and there was a couple more improvements we can make so fingers crossed it will be enough.”
