Leon Haslam has cut Shane Byrne's MCE British Superbike championship lead to 17 points with a flawless double race victory at Assen to set up an intense final round at Brands Hatch.

The JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider was once again involved in a fierce battle for the lead during the opening laps with team-mate James Ellison and Honda's Jason O'Halloran while Byrne suffered a poor start to drop to 12th on the first lap.

The four-time BSB champion showed his speed by recovering to work his way up the order lap by lap to catch the front pack which contained all six Showdown contenders.

Despite spending the majority of laps out front Haslam couldn't build a gap over his rivals which saw Byrne jump from sixth to second in the space of four laps.

With the fastest lap of the race on the second to last lap Byrne closed up to the rear of Haslam's Kawasaki but couldn't find a way past the former World Superbike star, forcing him to settle for a consecutive second place as Haslam took another five points out of the championship deficit.

After another strong showing O'Halloran eased to third place ahead of Honda team-mate Dan Linfoot with Quattro Plant Kawasaki's Luke Mossey improving on his race one performance to take fifth.

Tyco BMW's Michael Laverty once again acted as a Showdown spoiler with sixth place nipping ahead of Ellison who faded late on but held off the second Tyco BMW of Christian Iddon.

ePayMe Yamaha's Broc Parkes gave another positive outing to Tommy Hill's team in ninth ahead of Buildbase BMW's Richard Cooper and Smiths BMW's Jakub Smrz.

The second Be Wiser Ducati rider Glenn Irwin secured 12th just in front of Lee Jackson as Peter Hickman and John Hopkins completed the points-paying positions.
