Shane Byrne has grabbed the MCE British Superbike championship lead with victory in the opening race at Brands Hatch GP which was red flagged at the start of the penultimate lap due to rain.

The Be Wiser Ducati rider was involved in a multiple rider battle for the lead in the closing stages after an early safety car bunched the pack up after Shaun Winfield's heavy fall at Hawthorns.

After the race lead changed hands almost every lap between the front-runners, Byrne only broke into the lead on lap 18 passing Dan Linfoot up the inside at Surtees. The Honda Racing rider was denied the chance to battle back in the final two laps when the red flag came out for rain which had been circling the Brands Hatch GP circuit.

With the race somewhat prematurely halted as Byrne claimed his 16th BSB career win at the Kent circuit and Linfoot secured his first podium of 2017 in second place, Leon Haslam was forced to settle for third place on the JG Speedfit Kawasaki.

After the early safety car and difficult weather conditions it saw the top 12 split by under four seconds at the time of the red flag, as Peter Hickman narrowly missed out on a first podium of 2017 for Smiths Racing BMW in fourth but ahead of Anvil Hire Yamaha's Josh Brookes and McAMS Yamaha's James Ellison.

Jason O'Halloran recovered from a couple of hairy moments on his Honda to claim seventh from Christian Iddon on the Tyco BMW and John Hopkins on the Moto Rapido Ducati.

Bradley Ray on the Buildbase Suzuki completed the top ten just ahead of fellow youngster Jake Dixon on the RAF Reserves Kawasaki as Luke Mossey lost the championship lead after a frustrating 12th place finish.

Michael Laverty had to settle for 13th place on the McAMS Yamaha as Tommy Bridewell (Team WD-40 Kawasaki) and Lee Jackson (Smiths Racing BMW) completed the points finishers.
