Despite having failed to raise the budget to secure himself a seat for the full British Touring Car season, Renault Clio frontrunner Daniel Buxton has been drafted in to replace Carl Breeze at Team Halfords for the rest of the year.

The Peugeot team, which has so far struggled manfully to get its two Touring-spec 307 models on the pace, parted company with Breeze yesterday [Thursday], as the youngster left to join class rivals GA Motorsport in place of Gavin Pyper. Buxton - the 2001 Renault Clio Cup champion and current series points leader - was called up as replacement almost immediately, having impressed the team with his abilities during a pre-season test in the older 406 at Donington Park before Christmas.

The team said that there had been no falling out with Breeze, who it realised could be able to enjoy more success elsewhere.

"This is an amicable split between the two parties, both of which are striving to achieve better results," commented team boss Vic Lee, "The lack of testing available to us is proving difficult for car and driver to reach their full potential. Both myself and Team Halfords wish Carl Breeze all the best for the future."

Dan Eaves will remain as lead driver at Team Halfords, and is expected to help Buxton make the transition from Clio Cup to BTCC at this weekend's eleventh and twelfth rounds at Croft.
