Gavin Smith is set to line-up alongside Yvan Muller and Colin Turkington at VX Racing for the 2005 British Touring Car Championship, according to reports.

Although the team has yet to make an official announcement confirming the former SEAT Cupra championship racer in the role, Motorsport News reports that the deal had been done and quotes the Irish driver as saying he is excited to be joining the multi championship winning team.

"I am in at the deep end a little bit, but I have got some great team mates to learn from," Smith is quoted as saying. "After two trying years in the SEAT series I had to step up. It was the right time, and as soon as I knew there was a Vauxhall drive was available, I made contact with Triple Eight. I feel comfortable in the car already."

Smith's only previous appearance in the BTCC was in his home round at Mondello Park last season, when the lack of a SEAT Cupra race on the support package left him free to take a one-off drive with GA Motorsports, with tenth in the second race of the day his best result.

Smith finished the season in fifth place in the SEAT standings and will join series champion James Pickford on the BTCC grid as he competes for the works SEAT team for 2005.

More on the official line for VX Racing as soon as we get it...
