Newly crowned Independent drivers' champion Tom Ingram has described his 2017 BTCC campaign as 'absolutely incredible' after ticking off the main objectives Speedworks Motorsport set themselves heading into the season at Brands Hatch.

Ingram capped off what has proven to be a highly successful season for the Toyota outfit by clinching his first ever Independent drivers' title, while also guiding Speedworks Motorsport to a maiden Independent' teams' crown after delivering another trio of top six-finishes at the finale.

Having consistently been one of the front-runners during the 2017 season, Ingram arrived into the finale with the faintest mathematical chance of taking the overall drivers' crown, 67 points behind eventual champion Ashley Sutton - with 67 then still on the table.

Although his hopes quickly evaporated on that front, Ingram still ended the year as the top FWD runner ahead of outgoing champion Gordon Shedden by two points.

"Three big things. Independents’ title, Independent teams’ title and third overall as the first FWD car. Incredible, absolutely incredible," said Ingram.

"Considering we’re just a little team from up North, it’s pretty amazing what we’ve just done.

"We came into the season with our aspirations to get the Independents’ title wrapped up, with the other aspiration of trying to be in the mix come the season end.

"Every weekend we’ve come in we’ve been right at the front and we’ve been on it."

Indeed, in terms of delivering a car that's been straight on the pace, Ingram believes his Speedworks outfit has done that better than anyone else on the grid this season.

Behind the wheel of the Toyota Avensis, Ingram led more laps than anyone else in 2017, which translated into the 23-year old clinching four victories, second only to Subaru's Sutton on six.

"Year and year you learn more from it. You understand what you need from the car and you understand what you need from each weekend. It’s just about experience," Ingram continued.

"Unless you’re in a car which has an obvious advantage it’s very difficult to try and perform. I honestly think we’ve done the best job of anyone out there this year.

"In terms of bringing a car every weekend that’s right on the pace so for us I think we’ve done the best job of anyone on this grid to get third."
