Edoardo Mortara will drive for Mercedes in the 2017 DTM season after leaving Audi following a six-season stint with the Ingolstadt manufacturer.

The 29-year old's final act with the Audi DTM team almost took Mortara to a maiden title but came up just four-points of eventual champion Marco Wittmann.

Since making his DTM debut with the Team Rosberg squad back in 2011, Mortara has won eight victories for Audi - five of them coming in 2016 with the Abt Sportstline squad.

Mortara's signing with Mercedes has ended months of speculation after rumours of the Italian evaluating a move away from Audi began to surface earlier in the year.

Indeed, Mercedes' Head of DTM Ulrich Fritz admitted the deal had been finalised 'for some time' but refrained from announcing the signing of Mortara in respect to rivals Audi.

"We are delighted to finally announce Edoardo Mortara as one of the team's race driver for 2017," said Fritz.

"Edoardo and Mercedes came to an agreement for some time but due to respect to Audi, we didn't announce the signing of their title contender earlier.

"Edoardo is a perfect fit for our team. He's not only an experienced race driver but also a great character. We're looking forward to a successful partnership with him."
