Kimi Raikkonen emerged as the quickest driver during the second day of Formula One testing at Barcelona, despite a KERS issue which forced the Finn to bring his programme to an early end.

The Ferrari man started his programme by working through set-up evaluation before entering into a planned Grand Prix weekend simulation at the wheel of the F60. However, a problem with the KERS cooling system forced Ferrari to bring its programme to an early end, although Raikkonen was still fastest with a time of 1min 20.314secs from his 55 laps.

Raikkonen was followed on the times by the Williams of Kazuki Nakajima and the Brawn F1 of Rubens Barrichello, with the Brazilian taking over at the wheel from Jenson Button for his first taste of the BGP001 and continuing the impressive early performance of the car.

Jarno Trulli was fourth quickest for Toyota in what was his final testing appearance of the winter, with the Italian working on set-up and pit-stop practice over the course of the day; completing more than 100 laps in the process.

"Today was my last day of testing for the winter," he said. "We again did a lot of laps including some interesting long runs as we finalised our preparations for Melbourne. It's clear we will only find out the true picture in Australia but I'm happy with our work in the course of the tests we've done. The car has been competitive and consistent so we can head into the first race with confidence. I feel ready."

Mark Webber was two tenths of a second behind Trulli in fifth, despite an electrical gremlin on the RB5 which his time on track, while the top six was completed by BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld as he ran through a problem-free race simulation before carrying out pit-stop and start practices in the F1.09.

Force India continued with to see encouraging results from the new VJM02 as Adrian Sutil completed more than 80 trouble-free laps to take his total mileage in the car this week to just under 1000km before he hands the car over to Giancarlo Fisichella tomorrow.

"We could do a lot of running again today, which was the main aim of the programme," he said. "I feel a lot more confident in the car now we have got some reliability and can start to look at different set-ups and making the tyres work. We know we have a lot of work to do, particularly with the tyres as we still struggle to bring them in, but we now have a good idea of how the car is behaving. I'm looking forward to Melbourne now."

Fernando Alonso was eighth quickest for Renault while Heikki Kovalainen was ninth for McLaren as the team continued work on the MP4-24 but failed to make an impact near the top of the times.

"We are running through a big programme in Barcelona this week," McLaren Racing managing director Jonathan Neale said. "Not only have we introduced a new series of aerodynamic components to MP4-24 but we have also been working on the car's set-up and balance over longer runs as well as rehearsing our pitstop procedures. It's been a very productive few days with Heikki in the car and we are hoping for an equally satisfactory conclusion to the week when Lewis takes to the track tomorrow."

Behind Kovalainen, the second day of running proved to be one to forgot for Toro Rosso, with Sebastien Bourdais and Sebastien Buemi ending the day at the bottom of the times.

Bourdais had been due to spend the day at the wheel of the STR4, but an issue with the front suspension on the car after just 14 laps saw the Frenchman forced to end his programme with the team requiring new parts from its Faenza base to solve the problem.

The team elected to then put Buemi in the car to complete a series of sighter laps to give him chance to try his seat position and get a feel for the new car ahead of his first day of testing tomorrow.
