Nick Heidfeld has revealed that he would find it 'interesting' to revive his long relationship with BMW after the Bavarian manufacturer rejoins the DTM in 2012 - though he insists he is far from ready to hang up his F1 helmet just yet.

Having found himself without a cockpit on the grand prix grid this season following BMW's withdrawal late last year, Heidfeld first found employment as Mercedes Grand Prix's test and reserve driver, before subsequently jumping ship to act as Pirelli's official tyre-tester and then returning to competitive action in-place of Pedro de la Rosa at Sauber for the final five races from Singapore onwards, swiftly re-adapting and going on to score six points.

Despite his impressive comeback, the 33-year-old German was swiftly informed that there was no room for him at the Hinwil inn next year, in the light of the recruitment of highly-regarded young GP2 Series graduate Sergio P?rez alongside Kamui Kobayashi - and despite his name being linked with available berths at both Force India F1 and Renault, in truth, Heidfeld's options appear limited and somewhat slim.

Having competed for BMW in the top flight from 2006 to 2009, however, the man dubbed 'Quick Nick' has conceded that he is open to re-establishing that partnership when the company re-enters pan-European touring car series the DTM in just over a year's time.

"I have not finished my career in F1, but working in the long-term with BMW when they return to the DTM would be interesting," he told Auto Bild, whilst BMW's departing motorsport director Dr. Mario Theissen has acknowledged that 'it will be important that we have a good development driver'.
