Pastor Maldonado was the major casualty in Q1 for this Sunday's F1 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix.

Maldonado finished just behind his Williams team-mate, Rubens Barrichello, the last man to make it through to the second session. Team Lotus' Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli came in 19th and 20th, just half a second off Barrichello. The Virgins of Timo Glock and Jerome d'Ambrosio followed in 21st and 22nd, with the Hispania's next up, and comfortably within the 107 per cent, meaning they will start tomorrow's grand prix having missed the opener in Australia.

Felipe Massa was the quickest of the runners for Ferrari in Q1 - on a 1m 36.744s, followed by Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Michael Schumacher, Kamui Kobayashi and Jenson Button in positions 2 through to 6. Red Bull Racing's Sebastian Vettel was only 10th and Mark Webber was 15th.

The only major incident in Q1 involved Sebastien Buemi, who lost the sidepod cover on the left-hand side of his Toro Rosso eight minutes in. That incident brought out the red flags, but the session re-started 4 minutes later.
